Becoming a Facilitator

Requirements of N-O-T Facilitators

N-O-T facilitators must —

  • Not have used tobacco in any form for at least 12 months.
  • Like working with teens and have a good rapport with them.
  • Complete the American Lung Association’s N-O-T Facilitator Training Workshop.

How much time is needed to be a facilitator?

Time requirements differ depending on the facilitator, the participating teens, and the region of the country. However, here is a list of general time commitments:

  • Workshop: 8 hours (required by the American Lung Association).
  • Participant recruitment: 1 or 2 hours per week for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Conducting program: 50 minutes each week, for 10 weeks.

Additional time with participating teens outside the sessions will vary depending on the participants, the facilitators’ relationship with the participants, and the group atmosphere.

Facilitator Training Workshop

What does the workshop entail?
The facilitator training explains nicotine addiction, curriculum content, program implementation, and group processes.

Facilitators learn and experience —
How to conduct N-O-T sessions and group activities.
How to handle challenges that arise.

After the workshop facilitators should be —
Able to help students quit smoking through the N-O-T program.
Able to deal with issues that arise during sessions.
Committed to and excited about N-O-T.

Why the workshop is conducted in-person
The workshop is conducted in person to ensure that facilitators understand the importance of specific skills and can demonstrate their ability to follow the curriculum. How a stop-smoking program is delivered is just as important as the messages and information that are delivered. A good facilitator makes N-O-T come alive for teens who participate. Good communication and empathy are essential to being a successful facilitator. The workshop and curriculum manual provide a strong foundation for understanding the content of N-O-T and how to deliver it effectively.

How to find a workshop
